Pedro Adao spent half his life trying to win his father’s approval. The traumas and difficulties of his childhood (heart wounds) caused him to believe LIES about himself. He was allowing the lies to dictate what success meant. The lies controlled his priorities and pushed him to make reckless choices.

Pedro needed the TRUTH to heal those heart wounds, and he found that healing in his Christian faith.
After deciding to follow Jesus, Pedro left his high-paying corporate job and spent four years reading the Bible. He spent four hours every day learning the TRUTH about life and realizing the LIES he had believed while working in the business world.

Pedro had to rediscover the foundation to success.

Now he’s even more successful than he was before. He’s influencing the influencers. He is working with one of the hosts from Shark Tank in his mastermind group. He’s running a growing, 7-figure business based on KINGDOM VALUES.

To help you identify these heart wounds, I’ll walk you through three common contradictions between Kingdom business and worldly business. If you see yourself in these contradictions, it might be an indicator that you have lies hiding in your life that affect the decisions you make in your business.

And once you identify heart wounds, you can begin the healing process.

3 Contradictions Between Kingdom Business and Worldly Business

When Pedro started reading his Bible for the first time, he began to discover contradictions between his past business mindset and his new faith in God. Business books and real estate courses said one thing, but the gospels said another.

How did business become so different from God’s word? It has to do with heart wounds and control. When people suffer from heart wounds, they allow bitterness and resentment to grow. As kids, we naturally protect ourselves from emotional hurt. We might get angry and defensive when someone criticizes us. We might isolate ourselves from other kids who bully us. But these defense mechanisms get distorted as we become adults. We end up wanting to CONTROL EVERYTHING just to avoid discomfort. We hurt other people because we don’t want to be hurt ourselves.

As you’ll see, the contradictions between Kingdom business and worldly business usually comes down to control issues.

1. People Don’t Give Credit to God

Pedro points to men like Jim Rohn who is known as the father of the success and self-improvement movement. Back then, Rohn presented sound life advice using Biblical stories. He didn’t offend people, but he showcased Biblical wisdom in a way that made people feel loved and included. He gave credit to the actual source.

The first contradiction between Kingdom business and worldly business lies in whether people give give credit where credit is due. Jim Rohn gave credit to God. He was open about the fact that his stories came from the Bible. But now success gurus like to take credit for themselves. They tweak stories just enough to call them “original” and then say, “Look what I invented.”

A Kingdom mindset gives credit to God for all blessings and success.

2. Businesses Tell Customers Half Truths

Pedro came from financial services where it’s OK to tell people half truths. It became second nature to ask, “What do I need to say to get the sale even if it hurts the client in the long-run?” He’d give clients a 280 pages prospectus that the average person will never read or understand.

He could justify treating clients badly because he wasn’t technically lying. He was just keeping some truths out of sight. It’s the client’s fault if they don’t read the legal language. It’s their fault if bad investment terms make them go bankrupt.

A Kingdom mindset prioritizes transparency and truthfulness based on the golden rule: treat others the way you’d like to be treated.

3. Money Becomes an Idol

You are not called to serve and honor your industry. You are called to serve and honor God above all. Too many businesspeople deflect blame for shady behavior by saying, “That’s just how it works in my industry.”

This excuse is dangerous and harmful. This excuse more or less says that money is more important than people. Eventually, you will start to think it’s OK to abuse people for money because, “That’s just how it works.” Find a way to serve God in that industry or leave. Don’t put the industry above God.

A Kingdom mindset puts people at the center. Money becomes a tool to serve people. A Kingdom business pushes back on the worldly charge to “Go build personal empires” and become a god unto yourself.

What Can I Do to Start Healing Heart Wounds and Creating A Kingdom Business?

Nobody is perfect. Even the apostles made mistakes and Jesus still used them for his Kingdom. You don't have to have everything together to start living for God's glory.

Sometimes the best way to begin the healing process is to take the first step. Here are two ways to get started!

Love Others

Pedro’s motto is: “Love is the ultimate business strategy. Whoever loves the most wins.”
God is love. The two greatest commandments are to love God and love others. The only reason you and I exist on this planet is because of love. And love is one of the most powerful forces in the universe.

How does this apply to business? Let’s say that you’re competing for customers with another business in your city. You have to differentiate yourself and show why you’re the better choice. The best way to do this is to love the customer. To love means being willing to do more for the customer. When you love, you do “unreasonable” things, going above and beyond to make their lives better.

Love your customers more. Love your target market more. Eventually, you will be compelled to do things by love that you were never smart enough to do by strategy. Figuring out a customer’s problem will be your secret formula for marketing A/B tests.

Who wouldn’t want to buy from a business that puts loving the customer first in their list of priorities?

Address Your Own Heart Wounds

YOU are not a failure – that's not where your identity lies – but I know that you have failed in one way or another. We all have. And many of us continue to fail in the same ways, over and over again. Sometimes we call these repetitive failings addictions and sometimes we just call them “bad habits.”
Whatever your failing happens to be, it comes from a heart wound. Heart wounds create blind spots that hold us back from grasping the abundant life God has planned for us.

Pedro wrestled with his own heart wound early on in his career. Remember his “tough love” dad? Pedro was so desperate to win his dad’s affection that he threw himself into making money. He was too eager and took on too much wealth. He wanted to create wealth FAST so he could show his dad he was successful. Pedro ended up $3 million in debt, suicidal, and depressed.

Earth is a planet of orphans who don’t know their fathers. We need healing. Otherwise our brokenness will appear in our businesses and family relationships.

You’ll continue micromanaging your employees until they resign.

You’ll continue snapping at your kids until they resent you.

You’ll continue turning down business partnership opportunities out of fear.

Of course, negative consequences are just that: consequences. You can’t avoid these consequences without admitting that there’s an underlying problem. Are you willing to acknowledge that you have heart wounds that need healing? This is the first step to turning your life around.

Three Action Steps You Can Take Today

Thankfully, God provides healing through the Bible and mentors. All he asks is for humility and for you to give him control of the situation like a child trusts a parent. Here are three steps to lean into that childlike trust.

1. Invest in Getting Your Heart Healed

In one of his parables, Jesus describes the human heart like soil. A healthy and healed heart produces good fruit, but a worried, anxious, traumatized heart does not produce much. Look, it’s impossible to get out of childhood unscathed. You’re not to blame for everything that’s happened in your life.

All of us have rocks and weeds and wounds and traumas in our hearts. The cure is to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the lies. These lies are the rocks and weeds that compromise the heart soil. They’re what keep you from seeing God for who he truly is. Therefore, inner healing is the process of replacing lies with truth about what God says about each area of your life.

A pastor, trusted mentor, or spiritual coach can help with this. People rarely change on their own. We need community and accountability to shine light on the dark areas of our hearts.

2. Invest in Your Understanding of the Kingdom

We’ve talked about how the Kingdom and business worlds contradict one another. If you don’t understand how the kingdom works, you might never know that your business mindset is hurting other people.

Jesus’s core message was to repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand. We can’t obey Jesus if we don’t understand what the Kingdom of God is.

An important thing to remember is that the Kingdom of God is not a democracy. Jesus is a king. He’s given us the Bible to help us understand how he rules. If you still believe that you are the king of your own life, you’re going to have a hard time understanding the Kingdom of God and what that means for your business.

Begin reading your Bible. You can’t understand God’s plan for your life until you know what he says. Reach out to other Christian leaders in your city. Talk to business owners who share the same values and ask them how they have built companies that serve the Kingdom.

3. Remember that Faith is an Action Word

In the end, love and serve people well. Who is the greatest in the Kingdom? It’s the servant. Many people live paralyzed lives wishing God would just tell them what to do. “If only I had a burning bush or a sign in the sky to tell me what to do!” The thing is, God has revealed what you should do. Love God. Love others. You can serve wherever you are. Open your eyes. People are hurting. There are problems everywhere.

Before becoming a successful coach for Christian women, Cherlyn Decker lived your typical, hectic corporate life. As a mother, she felt guilty for not spending enough time with kids. 1. Give Control to God at the First Opportunity

Cherlyn knows that God prunes us like a vine. He needs to take off the old parts of our personalities so that the good parts can grow strong. God asks us to lay things down before him. These might include worries, grudges, and even lifelong dreams.

People like to use the excuse of, “Ah, I need to work on that. Yes, I’m going to work on that” when asked to lay things down before God. This is a dangerous mindset. Underneath this excuse is a need for control. If you’re the one who needs to work on your issues, that means you’re telling God that you’ve got it. Your ego kicks in and snatches away control. You keep the ball in your court, not God’s. Instead, you need to give control to God NOW. At the first opportunity.

Too often, we have our fists tightly gripped around things that don’t matter. As soon as we let go, we get to experience God’s true freedom.

2. Use Rest as a Weapon

When God leads us into the wilderness, he doesn’t ask us to sit on our couches and watch movies. That’s leisure. Distracting yourself with Netflix binges is leisure. True rest means more than doing nothing. Real rest is empowering. Rest is when we slow down and listen to what God is pouring into us.

Many of us work jobs that drain us. We put in long hours and sacrifice time with family and friends to perform well. Do I need to say that this leads to burnout and dissatisfaction? Sometimes having all those responsibilities stripped away can be a great blessing. Sometimes God needs to POUR INTO US so that we’re empowered to do his will.

3. When the Enemy Tells You Lies, Say, “Wrong Address”

The enemy will take advantage of any season of waiting to discourage you and tear you down. Sometimes these attacks sound like a critical voice inside your head. Sometimes your friends and family question your motives and make fun of you. Sometimes complete strangers feel the need to call you out on Twitter and Facebook.

When you experience pushback, tell yourself “Wrong address. Return to sender.” Those lies are not meant for you. Reject them.

Of course, be careful that you don’t cut yourself off from mentorship and correction. That’s where point two comes into play. If you know what God is calling you to do, then you’ll be able to identify the lies. For example, if God is saying that you’re in a season of waiting and you should leave client acquisition in his hands, then you can ignore the pesky friend who keeps suggesting you get a traditional nine-to-five job. Remember, Noah built the ark YEARS before the flood came. Be patient and handle lies when they come.

1. Don’t Lose Focus on What’s Important.

Money can be stolen and public opinion can change overnight. Neither fortune nor fame lasts forever. Instead, faith is what lasts and carries you through the valleys of life.

One of life’s strongest temptations is to lose focus on faith when times are good. When we’re enjoying times of blessing, we become spiritually lazy. We worship God’s blessings instead of God himself. We make money an idol and make ourselves miserable in pursuit.

Then when we realize we’re miserable chasing money, we make the mistake of digging even deeper. We say, “Happiness is right there around the corner. I can almost see it.” However, worldly pleasure will never satisfy no matter how much you of it you get. The enemy is going to tempt you with everything he can: sex, porn, drugs, self-centeredness, money, overwork. Don’t believe the lie that “just a little bit more” will be enough.

People who focus on God above all have peace. People who focus on money and pleasure do not. True, godly business owners still have as many problems as the next person, but they have peace. When hardship comes, stay calm and don’t lose focus on God.

2. Cooperate with God More and More (Especially after Failing).

Always strive to do more to accomplish God’s will. Work at it every day. Just like money is never enough, we can never do too much for God. Be careful not to make service an idol, but like the Bible says, continue serving God with a cheerful heart.

It’s easy to serve God when things are going well. It’s not easy to serve him when you’re facing bankruptcy, a struggling marriage, and volatile markets. It’s especially difficult when you’re the one who’s made the mistake. Expect it. You are human and you will disappoint others and say things you don’t mean. Cooperate with God even in those failures. Be Christlike, admit your failings, and ask for forgiveness. Lean on Christ, not your own strength.

3. Offer God Your Spiritual Surrender.

When hardship comes, don’t try to fix it yourself. Surrender all of it to God.

The best way to surrender spiritually is to get back to the basics of your faith. Pray for God to take control of your situation. Confess your sins to other Christians and let God do surgery on your heart. Find close friends and spiritual mentors to keep you accountable. These three steps will lead to spiritual surrender, and God will be able to use you and your business for his great purposes.

Earlier this year, my wife and I had our first child, a beautiful baby girl named Alora. She’s brought my little family so much joy. There’s no better feeling than holding her in my arms and telling her how much I care about her. But sometimes God brings us the greatest blessings through the hardest trials.

My wife suffered in labor for over 36 hours. I mean it when I say suffered. Every few minutes I would hear her cry out as another contraction pierced her body. There I was in the waiting room, and I felt utterly helpless. My inner control freak was on high alert. I had no idea if my wife or my new daughter would make it through the birth.

These were some of the hardest hours of my life. I know what you’re thinking, “Hey Joseph, what about your wife?” True, I can’t imagine the pain she was going through. But that doesn’t change the fact that I was the most scared and helpless I’d ever been.

The thing about men is that we don’t like feeling out of control. We’re told that losing control is a sign of weakness. We want to make sure our homes are safe. We want to make sure our employees stay focused all the time. Men are born control freaks.

Of course, we’re not in total control. Like I learned that day at the hospital, I was nearly irrelevant. The more I tried to control the situation, the more anxious I became. It was a horrible spiral.

Eventually, my wife’s cries of pain became too much. I had to step outside and confront God. In tears, I begged him to save my family. On my knees, I cried out for God to provide the safety I couldn’t produce.

At this moment, I learned a valuable lesson about surrender. It’s a lesson that all control freaks can apply to their lives. There are actually two kinds of surrender – one shows weakness but the other shows strength.

If you can understand the two kinds of surrender, you, too, can overcome anxiety and your inner control freak even in times of incredible pressure.

Physical Surrender

Men are often taught that life is like a war. You play sports to win and lose. You run your business to outperform your competitor. Like a soldier on the battlefield, surrender is not an option. Losers surrender. And men like us don’t want to be losers.

I don’t recommend physical surrender to anyone. I don’t want to give up or hand over my life’s work to someone else. I don’t want to sit by as someone else makes bad decisions for my family. And I definitely never would have told the doctor, “Well, you tried helping my wife. Let’s just head home.”

Physical surrender means giving up when you should continue fighting. Physical surrender is a show of weakness. Sadly, it’s the only kind of surrender men are taught.

Spiritual Surrender

Spiritual surrender is completely different than physical surrender. This is the kind of surrender I learned during my day at the hospital. A man must spiritually surrender when he knows the situation is outside his control.

Otherwise, he becomes anxious. Anxiety happens when we attempt to control the uncontrollable. Your kid stays out past curfew and you don’t know where they are. That causes anxiety. You follow the ups and downs of the stock market every day. That causes anxiety. The more a man tries to fix an unfixable situation, the more anxious he becomes.

So, even if I had been in the doctor’s room, I wouldn’t have been able to help my wife. I have no medical training. I probably would have made things worse. Therefore, I had to allow the doctors to take control. More importantly, I had to give over control to God.

Spiritual surrender means stepping aside so that someone more powerful can enter the situation. There is no one more powerful than God.

The Bible calls this emptying ourselves.

In Phillippians, Paul says he pours himself out like a drink offering. He admits his weaknesses and doesn’t try to pretend he’s in control. He works hard but knows his limits. In 2 Corinthians, he even says, “When I am weak, then I am strong.” Why is Paul strong when he is weak? It’s because God’s grace is able to enter his life. God is able to work his power in the places where Paul doesn’t have control, in the places of weakness.

It sounds like a contradiction, doesn’t it? But this is how God works. He chooses the timid, the stutterers, and the poor to complete his good work. God can only work through you and remove your anxiety if you surrender to him.

Say the Prayer of Surrender

If you are facing a total lack of control, I have a prayer that you can say right now. It’s the same prayer I spoke when I didn’t know how my daughter’s birth was going to end up. It’s a prayer you can use during times of crisis and uncertainty.

Say, “Father, I don’t think I have more to give, but take it if it’s there.”

Surrender what you have. Then surrender a little bit more. It’s time to confront your inner control freak. It’s time to overcome anxiety.

What if you lived the love you promised to her on your wedding day? It could change everything.

Make sure you orient yourself toward a relationship, not a concept.

2. Live Your Life for Others

You’re never going to find passion in your faith or marriage with good intentions. Boldness and courage take action. Once you orient yourself toward the right goal, it’s time to reach that goal.

The question is what kind of action are you going to take? Many men live for themselves. They work hard at their jobs to make money for their bank account. They buy the nice car. They treat women as things to be used, not beautiful people made in the image of God.

However, there’s nothing bolder than a man who is lit up in the flames of love, and love is focused on someone else. Use that love to serve things that matter. Serve your community, business, and family. Serve God above all, and you will rediscover a new sense of courage in everything you do.

3. Find a Place to Do Battle (That Isn’t Your Romantic Relationships)

Men need to release their competitive edge someplace. Sports are good, but they only go so far. Hitting a smooth three-pointer feels good, but it can’t actually address your underlying emotions. Therefore, you need to find a community of men that will challenge you.

Find men who you can stand up to and who stand up to you. Find those friends who will call you out when you cut corners, the friends who say, “The way you spoke to your wife the other night, that wasn’t appropriate.”

I know that men don’t like to be vulnerable. But a group like this isn’t for talking about mushy feelings. It’s a place where iron sharpens iron. All men need accountability and mentorship. Accountability will keep you pursuing God and your spouse with a true sense of determination.

Find accountability

Do you believe that someone could write a book in eight weeks? It seems almost impossible. To write a book in 8 weeks, you’ll need to sit down at your desk and write almost every day of the week. That kind of discipline will take a support system to keep you accountable.

One way to find accountability is to tell friends and family that you’re writing a book. Ask them to ask you how much you’ve written. A simple, “Are you done yet?” is usually enough to get you back to your computer to write another 1,000 words.

A second way to find accountability is to set a deadline. Make it a challenge. Five years to write a book is not a deadline. It’s too much time. There’s no urgency. Instead, choose a deadline that will force you to work at least a little bit everyday. Eight weeks is a great deadline. Six months also works. A little pressure can be an excellent motivator.

Find confidence in your reason for writing

Too many people never finish their first book because they aren’t confident in themselves. They’re paralyzed by the thought, “Who are you to give your opinions on this topic? Why is your story so important?” Don’t give into the fear, Startup Nation.

One way people cope with this doubt is to say, “I’m writing this book to help other people.” That’s a great reason to write. But be careful that you’re not using it as an excuse to shut down your own motivations. In counseling, they call this codependency. In an effort to avoid confronting your own needs, you try helping others.

Here’s what you can do to find confidence in your own reason for writing. Take out a pen and paper. Then write down the most selfish reasons why you want to write this book. Do you want to seem important in your business community? Do you want your emotions to be validated by fan mail? Do you want to give meaning to the years of pain you experienced with an abusive family member?

Once you get these motivations on paper, you’ll realize that they’re not as selfish as you first thought. You can start writing WITHOUT FEELING GUILTY. Look, if you’re not sold out for what you’re saying in the book, or you’re scared, you may finish your book, but the book won’t go anywhere after it’s done.

Find the experiences that make up your story

Your book needs to be an experience for the reader. It shouldn't be a collection of interesting facts. It shouldn’t even be an account of your life. Your book must be a portal that readers can enter to see the world through your eyes.

Think about Disney’s brand. Disney doesn’t sell movie tickets or theme park passes. They sell experiences. Their ads show happy families sitting on a couch watching one of their movies. They show kids having the times of their lives at Disney World. You can almost feel the water splashing your face at the end of the roller coaster ride. You’re right there throwing your arms around Mickey Mouse with a big smile.

Disney knows that people want feel-good experiences, and that people are willing to pay for those experiences over and over again. Don’t believe it? Disney made $78 billion in revenue last year. There’s the proof.

So, how do you start to make your book into an experience? Describe the five senses: touch, hearing, sight, smell, and taste. Then describe what you felt during key moments of your story. Were you afraid? Were you angry? Were you overwhelmed with joy?

Write scenes so that your readers say, “I felt as though I could almost feel the ____”

By telling your story through experience, you’ll create a powerful understanding and empathy with the reader. If you can do that, you will reach bestseller status in no time.
