A Conversation with Joseph Warren and Alexander Seery
Making your first $100K is a piece of cake, Startup Nation.
At least that’s the illustration Alexander Seery uses. He’s the owner of Shift to Success where he helps police officers and NHS workers become entrepreneurs. How does someone shift to success?
It’s not that complicated.
In fact, 90% of successful entrepreneurs rely on a few basic ingredients. See where we’re going here? Like baking a delicious cake, you only need a few simple ingredients to make your first $100K.
Here are Alexander Seery’s top 3 ingredients that you need, right now, for entrepreneurial success.
Have a Vision
Alexander used to work as a police officer and found it wasn’t for him. The hours were long and he felt lonely on his late night shifts. It’s a common experience, Startup Nation, in any industry. Do you resonate with Alexander?
Eventually, he had to get real with himself. Was this the life he wanted to live?
No. Alexander wanted to live life on his terms with more income and time to do the things he wanted. He wanted to feel passionate about his work.
But before he could move on from his current life, he had to have a vision for the future. He needed a destination. If you step into a kitchen, you need to know what you’re going to bake. Throw a few random ingredients into a bowl… and you’ll end up with a disaster.
Create an Uplifting Environment
The people we surround yourself with will determine your level of success. If your friends resent people who are more successful than they are, that’s going to rub off on you. If your friends are all talk and no action, you’re going to find it hard to get out of that mindset.
Instead, find mentors and coaches who have already been where you want to go. Ask the opinions of people you respect. This will jumpstart your trajectory and save years of unnecessary hard work and mistakes.
Also, clean your room. A cluttered living space only leads to a cluttered mind.
Again, it’s just like starting with a clean kitchen. Know where your appliances are. Don’t have people walking in and messing up your system. Create a healthy environment where you can focus on the important tasks at hand.
Get to Work
You can prepare all you want, but you won’t get a great cake unless you mix the flower and crack a few eggs.
Alexander says the key ingredients for success are persistence, determination, and personal development. I get that some of these words are abstract. You want practical advice. OK, so what does hard work and persistence look like practically?
Here’s a list:
All of these things can be measured and recorded. You don’t say a cake needs eggs. You say a cake need three eggs. You can’t wake up saying, “I’ll make some calls today.” You need to say, “I’m going to call 15 prospects and pitch them my services.”
Success is specific. Wake up, get to work, and see results.
Bake that success cake, Startup Nation. Alexander says 9/10 entrepreneurs can expect solid results if they follow this simple recipe.
KEY TAKEAWAY: Anyone can make their first $100K. But they don’t because they refuse to cast vision, create a good environment, and get to work.
