A Conversation with Joseph Warren and Tim Storey

​Tim Storey is known as the “Pastor to the Stars.” He works with celebrities like Oprah, Robert Downey Jr., and Kanye West. He’s one of the most thoughtful, genuine men I know.
 
Recently, he shared a lifechanging lesson about slowing down and overcoming anxiety. A stranger taught him this lesson, and it has been so inspirational to him that he thinks about this person every week.

Years ago at the start of his career, Tim had wrapped up a seminar and was rushing through the Las Vegas airport to catch his next flight. He wanted to reach his gate early to review notes for his next keynote. Like a true entrepreneur, he was focused and on to the next task.
 
But as Tim beelined to his gate, a woman called out and asked if he wanted a shoeshine.
 
Most days Tim would have said, “No.” He didn’t wear dress shoes. Tennis shoes were more his style. But that day he happened to be wearing a pair of luxury, leather shoes. Funny how God works!
 
So, Tim sat down in the chair. The two got to talking. He told the woman all about his speaking and coaching business. The woman listened. She said was from Kenya and used to be a missionary. 
 
At the end of the shoeshine, she asked, “Do you mind that I pray over your feet?”
 
Tim said yes, and as the woman prayed for him, he felt the presence of the Holy Spirit deeply and personally.
 
She said, “Don’t ever forget, young man, that in the midst of this pace – I saw you walking fast – stop and remember who is your source.”
 
Stop and remember your source.
 
It’s been years since this holy shoeshine, but Tim recalls it like it was yesterday. “At that time in my life I was so, so busy. But she helped me to remember to stop and remember the source of your life. I was able to see the benefits of stopping by looking at her countenance.”
 
“Angelic” is the word he uses to describe the woman’s face. He thinks about her at least once a week, and the memory encourages him to stop, slow down, and remember God.

3 Steps to realign with God’s Plan: Stop, Look, Listen

God is the potter and you are the clay. The Bible says that God has already destined good works for you to do. Align yourself with what he is doing. 
 
Let me repeat. GOD LOVES YOU AND GOD HAS A PLAN FOR YOU. I know it’s hard to believe when things aren’t going the way you want them to. Your business partner just stabbed you in the back. Your spouse just moved to a separate apartment while you figure out what’s next. Your child has a serious chronic illness that isn’t getting any better.
 
But God still has a plan for you. To figure out what that plan is, follow Tim’s three steps.
 

1. Stop – You’re moving too fast and trying to figure it out yourself. Your busy schedule and racing thoughts are blocking out God’s voice.
2. Look – Look back to God, the author and finisher of your faith. It’s like a child hiking in the woods with their dad. The kid runs ahead full of excitement. But then when the path splits, they have to look back at their dad to know which way to turn.
3. Listen – Know God’s voice. Our minds are bombarded by voices. Society, family, politics, etc. Practice listening so that you can determine what’s God’s voice and what isn’t.

 
Stop. Look. Listen. It almost seems too simple. But it’s worked for Tim Storey and the millions of people he’s been able to bless through his ministry. I know it’s difficult being an entrepreneur. But you’ll never find true peace doing it all on your own. You need God.
 
Tim sums it up well. “My mind is filled by my relationship with God that is bringing me more fulfillment, more answers, more directions to tough situations in my life. It’s an ongoing process, but one day I will step over to the other side and have more answers. But until then, what a privilege it is to know him the way we get to know him even while we’re on the earth.”
