Religion and coaching. Both can be polarizing topics. Some people have great experiences with them. Others (for legitimate reasons) hate both. In this article, I’ll try to address a few common questions people have about business, Christianity, and coaching. How to they relate? Can they coexist? Of course, if you get to the end and you still have questions, email me at joseph(at)josephwarren(dot)net Can business and faith go together? Yes! Your faith doesn’t live within the walls of your local church. Your faith is the passion that drives everything that you do. Whatever faith you hold, that belief is a key part of who you are as a person. In spiritual coaching, we work together to make sure that you don't have to be split down the middle anymore. Your beliefs and your business can fully support and empower each other, while neither diminishes the other. Unfortunately, a lot of people mistakenly think they have to leave their faith outside their business. Christian business owners don’t often do a good job balancing the two. Either they exclude others who don’t believe the way they do. Or there’s simply no distinction between religious and non-religious business owners. But did you know religion-related businesses add $438 billion to the US economy each year? And that’s not including “regular” businesses run by Christians. Inc.com did a great feature on Bob Walker, a successful Christian CEO running a $56 million manufacturing company competing against the likes of Toro and John Deere. You don’t have to make little crosses to be a Christian businessperson. You just have to show up with love and listen to God’s voice. A La Tourneau business professor says, “Faith-based leadership of a company should make a difference in the integrity of a company, the quality of products sold, the way employees are treated, the concern a company shows toward its community, and the disposition of company leaders themselves. All of that should have an impact on profitability. But just as many Christian business leaders have failed ethically (think Ken Lay of Enron), great companies that follow biblical principles aren't necessarily guaranteed success." I’m already skeptical of regular coaching. Why should I get a spiritual coach? Coaching programs are a dime-a-dozen. You know it and I know it. You sign up for a program that promises to change your life. But you watch a few seminars and nothing’s changed. You might even talk to a live person, but he or she has never run a business in their life! Now you’re out a few grand. Look, I’m a ten-time failed entrepreneur. I’ve fought through the trenches of doubt and exhaustion. I’ve also had quite a few successes as well. But the reason so many coaching practices fail is because they’re not spiritual. You have a soul. We can’t ignore that fact. But so much of our modern world does. Spiritual coaching gets to the heart of the matter. My goal is to bring you the best combination of spiritual and business coaching. What are the benefits of spiritual coaching? Here are three quick benefits:
This list isn’t exhaustive. You can read more at “What is Spiritual Coaching and why do I need it?” But sometimes we need an objective person to keep us accountable. Not your family. Not your best friend. These people are great, but sometimes their closeness and emotional attachments can get in the way of honesty. A spiritual coach offers a refreshing dose of honesty. Check out this quote by former Google chairman, Eric Schmidt, on the value of business coaching: “How could a coach advise me if I'm the best person in the world at this? But that's not what a coach does ...They have to watch you and get you to be your best ... Once I realized I could trust him and that he could help me with perspective, I decided this was a great idea.” I agree with Eric. Christians are goody-two-shoes and I’m sick of itI get why you’d think that. A lot of times, Christians look like a glossy author photo on a NY Times bestselling hardcover. Some man or woman with an expensive suit and big, white teeth. They do a lot of finger-wagging about sins you do everyday. They’re perfect. You’re not. But you open the cover and realize they stink as bad as a week-old, sunbaked trashcan. In short, Christians are hypocrites. To be honest, I went through a period of time when I was pretty messed up. I’m still messed up in certain ways. We all are. But God has a way of providing grace for my failures. And that’s what I believe Christianity is about, grace and forgiveness. Think the Bible’s all about perfect people? Nope. The very first book of the Bible is full of stealing, murder, jealousy, and abuse. But God can come into each and every one of our lives and restore what’s been broken. That’s the story of the Bible: how God calls broken people to be who they were created to be. I promise that my spiritual coaching courses are judgment free. Your past is your past. You are you. I want both of us to be honest about our failures. But also honest about how much God loves us. That said, I’m looking for transformation. I will call you out on your crap. But it’s because I want you to succeed and step into the life God has planned for you. "I live in the real world, not some fairy land. My biggest need is business results." I used to think exactly this way. I thought one more sale, another $100k, another million dollars would make my life complete. Then I’d have time to relax and time to repair other areas of my life I’d neglected. But I was dead wrong. In fact, the world works the complete opposite. Get right with God and then you’ll be able to win at life. If you don’t believe in God, that’s ok. We’re all coming from different places. And if your life is perfect without God, then I’m not going to judge that. But you’re on a spiritual coaching website. Why? What are you searching for? If you don’t believe in spirituality, how do you think I can help you? Then again, I do host Your First 100k Podcast. Business is part of your life and we can definitely talk about that. But it’s not the most important part of your life. My life is too far gone to salvage, what’s the point? This is a lie. Straight up. This is a lie. Most of the time, our biggest flaws come from our deepest desires. We act out because we feel we can’t fully be ourselves. I grew up in a poor family. I had friends who always seemed to have the newest bike and the coolest clothes. And there I was getting picked on because of my hand me downs. As a teen, I decided to get into business because I didn’t want to live that way anymore. I wanted to help out my family. And these were GOOD DESIRES. But they got me into trouble when I pursued money and success above everything else. God made you with desires, emotions, and passions. Spiritual coaching can give you clarity on these areas of your life. Instead of acting out defensively, we can give you the awareness you need to act out of joy and freedom. Jonathan Cronstedt, President of Kajabi, said this: “There are few things in life more powerful than CLARITY. I can't think of anything that will drive results faster than clarity. Joseph is kind enough to help you unlock those opportunities that you're not taking advantage of!” Did Jesus have anything to say about business? Depending on your background, this might sound weird, but he did. Jesus talked about money, investing, and treating employees well. In fact, sixteen of the thirty-eight parables were concerned with how to handle money and possessions. But Jesus wasn’t trying to sell a business seminar. He often used these examples to uncover deeper human truths. How important should God be in our lives? What does God expect from us? Why did Jesus come to Earth? He answered these questions and more by talking about money and business. As entrepreneurs, we can’t ignore business. We shouldn’t! Some of us were born to build businesses and bless others with our success and passion. But just like Jesus did, we should keep business in its proper place in our lives. If I become a Christian, will my business succeed?I am NOT promising that you’ll become a millionaire if you become a Christian or take my spiritual coaching course. God isn’t promising that either.
But I AM confident that I can improve your personal and business life through spiritual life coaching. You can reclaim peace and joy in areas of your life that have been dark and painful for years. I want to help you realize happiness is not about money or success. REAL success is about knowing your Creator and knowing that He loves you deeply and unconditionally. No matter where you are in life, you can live your daily life with peace. Again, I’ll leave you with a simple question. Do you want REAL success, deep fulfillment, and total peace of mind? If the answer is “Yes,” then let’s jump on a Spiritual CLARITY Call together. No cost. No big commitment. Just an honest conversation to give you clarity on what you want in your life.
