A Conversation with Joseph Warren and Kimberly LuchtIn 2015, Kimberly Lucht, a successful business coach for women, shaved her head. I guess that’s the sign of a true entrepreneur – a woman who takes risks. People judged her for the new look – “She must have had a mental break!” But she found it freeing. She spent less time spent washing, drying, and prepping. She spent more time on building her business. She could also say, “I did something most people are too afraid to do.” When I lived in New York, Startup Nation, I spent a day dressed as a homeless person. I didn’t shower for two weeks up to that point. I bought a wig to wear along with karate pants and sandals. I walked into my local bagel joint – where I went everyday – and NOBODY RECOGNIZED ME. All I got were dirty looks and side glances. So, what in the heck does this have to do with business? Your identity doesn’t come from the outside After Kimberly shaved her head, she realized it wasn’t as drastic a gesture as she’d thought. She definitely looked different, but she didn’t feel different. Kimberly says, “We can attach a lot of who we are to how much money we make or how many media features we get, or how many clients we have… But no matter how much hair you have, no matter what you look like, no matter how much money you’re making, you’re still you. The essence of you is the same.” In my homeless disguise, I felt TRUE FREEDOM. It might sound crazy, but I felt like I could be me. I didn’t have to play the Joseph Warren character I’d presented to the bagel shop employees day in and day out. Startup Nation, who you are is not based on what you look like, how much you make, or who your friends are. Integrity and fulfillment come from within. The sooner you embrace that, the sooner you’ll become the confident, risk-taking entrepreneur you were born to be! Now let’s make this practical. Charge higher rates by balancing who you are with who you’re becoming Nobody starts out charging $100,000 per client. If you try, I promise that no prospect will take you seriously. “But Joseph, you’re always saying I need to charge what I’m worth!” Exactly. I’ve been coaching for years, and I’ve always enjoyed connecting with business owners to work through their problems. Deep down, I am a coach. It’s who I am. But when I started spiritual coaching, I had some learning to do. I had done business coaching for a long time, but I had to become a spiritual coach. And I had to move from a good spiritual coach to a great spiritual coach. When I started, I felt I wasn’t worth a large amount of money yet. Startup Nation, focus on the “yet.” Every single person has unique talents and gifts. That passion for crafting beautiful furniture, it’s in you for a reason. Or maybe you love coding computer software. Do it! I’m not an exception. I had to get the bugs out of my own coaching process before I could raise my rates. I relied on insight and intuition, but I needed a structured process. Kimberly shares a great metaphor: “Focus on how you’re going to change somebody’s life. If someone’s choking, are you going to go get CPR training or are you going to help them right then and there? Ask yourself, ‘How can I help my clients now using the training and information I already have?’ Charge what you’re worth. If it feels good in your body… then charge that.” Don’t be held back by lack of experience. Be honest with yourself and master your craft. You’ll be surprised at how clients will be HAPPY TO PAY YOU WHAT YOU’RE WORTH. Key Takeaway Raising your rates comes down to this: find an honest balance between who you are and who you’re becoming. Then charge accordingly. Did you know that most entrepreneurs struggle only with 10 simple questions? As a longtime coach, I can vouch for this. I'm always asked, "How do I grow my business so it can run without me?" and "How do I make more money so I can spend time with my spouse and kids?" and "Why am I still plagued by self-doubt?"
Well, I created a 10-day email course to show business owners like you the tips, tricks, and mindset shifts to overcome these questions! If you can master the lessons in this course, you'll be ahead of 95% of the competition. Click below to get started.
